Celebrating 10 years of FabLab Amsterdam

Fablab Amsterdam celebrates its tenth anniversary this year! On November 4th, we will trow a serious afternoon party to highlight the occasion. Come to our great Maker Show in our fabulously old Waag building, that we will redesign into a futuristic arcade hall for the critical maker.

With the pioneers in fabbing of the early years to the latest developments in open design, open science and open hardware: we will cover it all. Prepare yourself for a lot of action and entertainment, with a critical note.

Programme (still under construction)

  • We will start with Maker Talks, in which we will look back at the history of the first Fablab in The Netherlands, the power of open design, knowledge sharing and open innovation.
  • Next: the Extended Fablab. Fablabs these days cover a whole lot more than in the early years: from architecture to textiles, neuroscience, biotechnology and healthcare.
  • A changing world demands new skills. That’s where Maker Education comes in: how to use Fablabs to teach our kids the 21st century skills?
  • Maker mainstream / critical making: the maker movement has become mainstream. How does that impact society? More plastic rubbish or the opportunity to repair things and to fully use the potential of Fablabs.
  • Fab City: a new model for locally productive and globally connected, self-sufficient cities? In a Fab City, citizens are empowered to be the masters of their own destiny, their resilience is increased and a more ecological system is developed because movement of materials and energy consumption is drastically reduced.
  • And finally: the Maker Show: discuss the role of algorithms while programming your own self-driving car, or dive into the existing copyright and ownership situation while building an excentric drawing robot. You are at the helm!
